As an MEA for my third grade classroom I designed data and a problem for students to plan the field trip to a Florida Planetarium.
"Class we have been studying space for the past few weeks and to see some of the things we've been studying. There are quite a few planatariums nearby and I think that we should plan a field trip to one of them."

Data Set 2
Data Set 1
Looking at Data Set 1 ask students to decide which planetarium they think would be best to visit. The cost refers to cost per person. Have students talk with their group to rank the museums from 1-3 (want to go to the most-least.) After 5-10 minutes students will pair up with a friend from another group and discuss how their group ranked the planetariums. The pair will talk about what made them pick their order.
Then, the teacher will pose another problem. We need to consider how much time they have in a day. If they go somewhere farther away they will have less time to explore the planetarium. Now students will be asked to show the reordering of ideas based on Data Set 2. Students will also calculate the miles per hour the bus would drive and time it takes to get to and from the museum. The students will create a small schedule from when the buses would leave to when the buses need to come back with 30 minutes for lunch.
